We are over two years into the Covid-19 pandemic and New Yorkers’ needs are drastically evolving. Now is the time to prepare the next generation of urban planners to ensure we can keep pace with challenges related to housing, transportation, greenspaces, and much more. The New York City Community Planning Fellowship offers real-world educational experiences to second-year graduate students from seven New York City universities who are pursuing master’s degrees in urban planning, architecture, urban design, historic preservation, and public policy. Fellows are paired with Community Boards throughout the five boroughs over the course of two semesters, undertaking planning activities and gaining first-hand experience in local government and planning issues.
In the Community Board offices, Fellows expand Board capacity by lending their expertise on zoning, transportation, retail development and other land use projects. They also assist board members and staff in finding solutions to quality-of-life issues of importance to local neighborhoods.
Through their support for Community Boards, the 2022-2023 cohort will equitably and inclusively help this city recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. We have no doubt they will rise to the challenges they face and contribute their much-needed skills, knowledge, and talents to address some of the most pressing needs Community Boards have identified.
