Bio

Celestina Leon, a native of Greensboro, North Carolina, has a profound connection to the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, where her roots trace back to Puerto Rico through her grandparents. Leon’s upbringing instilled in her a deep appreciation for hard work and service to others. Her commitment to education and community service was evident from a young age, excelling academically and actively participating in various extracurricular activities. Even during her high school years, she took on leadership roles and contributed to her community. This dedication continued into her college years at Boston University, where she was involved in numerous campus organizations and activities. After graduating, Leon began her career in public service, working as a Communications Assistant for a NYS Assembly Member before transitioning to roles in the City Council and eventually becoming the District Manager of Community Board 4. In this position, she has been instrumental in advocating for the Bushwick community and addressing issues such as affordable housing, gentrification, and economic development. Her unique blend of intellectual acumen, emotional connection to the community, and previous experience in public service has made her an exceptionally effective leader. Beyond her local impact, Leon has also played a significant role in advocating for improvements to all CBs, co-chairing a task force that issued a comprehensive report on the future of these boards. Her dedication to strengthening grassroots democracy and empowering local communities reflects her belief in the importance of community engagement and civic participation.
