Margaret Forgione’s journey from her childhood in Stamford, Connecticut, to her current role as First Deputy Commissioner of the NYC Department of Transportation is deeply rooted in her commitment to public service and community engagement. Forgione’s passion for public service began early. Her experiences, from earning the Girl Scouts’ highest honor to assisting Vietnamese refugee families, reflect a strong sense of empathy and a desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Her academic pursuits at the University of Connecticut and Columbia University further fueled her dedication to public service, providing her with the knowledge and skills necessary to address complex social issues. Her internships and volunteer work in social service agencies and city government agencies allowed her to gain hands-on experience and insight into the inner workings of public administration. Upon joining the NYC Department of Transportation, Forgione quickly distinguished herself. From spearheading initiatives like the Adopt-a-Highway program to overseeing large-scale transportation projects, she demonstrated a keen understanding of the challenges facing urban transportation systems and a commitment to finding creative solutions.
