About the Author
Born and raised in the South Bronx, Dr. Ruiz Lopez faced significant barriers, including systemic inequities and challenges as a teen mother. However, her story is one of perseverance and purpose. Dr. Ruiz Lopez’s passion for education led her to earn a doctorate from Columbia University’s Teachers College and ultimately establish the International Leadership Charter High School in the Bronx—a school that prepares underserved youth for college and beyond.
Over the years, she has become a champion of educational equity, working tirelessly to uplift her community and break the cycles of educational inequality. Dr. Ruiz Lopez has received numerous accolades, including the Educator of Excellence Award and recognition as one of the Power Women of the Bronx.
